“I have learned that what I have not drawn I have never really seen, and that when I start drawing an ordinary thing I realize how extraordinary it is, sheer miracle: the branching of a tree, the structure of a dandelion’s seed puff. ‘A mouse is miracle enough to stagger sextillions of infidels,’ says Walt Whitman. I discover that among the Ten Thousand Things there is no ordinary thing. All that is, is worthy of being seen, of being drawn.” - Frederick Franck
I've always liked pencil and ink sketches; have had a trio of Doug Tope prints in the living room for 30+ years. Far from an aficionado, something about the detail seizes and keeps my interest. How long does a sketch like that take? And is it something that can be set aside for a few hours and returned to for further work?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how long I sat out there, BB. Time seems to stand still, which is a feeling I quite like. With this kind of thing, I stay with it until I stop, since it is very "of the moment" -- and the moment is ephemeral.
