The purpose of the pure contour work is...Hi, Karen. The purpose of the pure contour work isn't to have a preliminary drawing to adjust and work from but to concentrate the eye on the subject. Our instructor last fall, Betsy Abeel, asked us to imagine our eyes tracing slowly around the contours of the subject and guiding our hands and pencils by remote control. It's an exercise in looking carefully and, I also think, feeling the object's contour. It settles the mind, too, which is good for meditation and good for drawing.P. J. I cannot imagine doing the pure contour drawing and getting decent results. What is the purpose of that stage? Do you correct that drawing going forward or do you start over?
